Table Tennis News

A team comprising of members of Table Tennis Group 5 have just completed their first season of competitive play in Division 1 of the Crewe and District Table Tennis League.  Playing out of the Post Office Club in Sydney against players aged from 14 to 80 the team finished a very creditable 3rd out of 13 teams and also reached the semi finals of the Victory Cup.  Some achievement as the team had not played competitive table tennis for many years.  We were able to secure shirt sponsorship (the only team in the league to have sponsorship!) and played under the name of our sponsors J S Sports, a sports clothing retailer based in Stoke-on- Trent.  Members of the squad (all TT5 group members) were Phil Beeden, Dave Bunting, Malcolm Edge, Alan Mounsey and Richard Thorne. The new season starts in September and some serious practice will be undertaken at the Scout Hut every Tuesday at mid-day.

Snobbery with violence: queens of crime and the detection club

Sandbach Library invites members to an entertaining literary talk by Olivia Smedley. This is a free event on Wednesday 27th July at 7.15pm.  Find out about the pioneering women writers of the Golden Age of Crime Writing, including Agatha Christie and Margery Allingham.

Clonter Opera Theatre

We are a theatre in Swettenham Heath and wondered if our upcoming production of Albert Herring, composed by Benjamin Britten, might be of interest to your U3A members.  Written in 1947 with witty English libretto by Eric Crozier, this operatic comedy was freely adapted from a short story of stifling village life and rebellion, “Le rosier de Madame Husson” by Guy de Maupassant.

Full event details can be found on our website – https://www.clonter.org/event/albert-herring/

To book in, please contact us by email at boxoffice@clonter.org  or by phone on 01260 224514 (Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10am – 4pm). Please note U3A members receive a 10% discount on tickets.
