Introducing another new Committee member – Jenny Haines

I was born and grew up in Nantwich and was educated at Nantwich Grammar School. I lived with my parents until I married Keith in 1972 and then moved all of 2 miles to Willaston. In 1979 a work-related move took us up to Lytham St Annes, and a subsequent work-related move brought us back to Cheshire in 1985 when we settled in Sandbach.
We have two daughters, who both attended Sandbach High School.  Our eldest, having graduated from university at Liverpool, moved around as a teacher and now lives back in Sandbach. Our younger daughter graduated from Cardiff University and for the last 21 years has lived in Hong Kong with her husband and two teenage sons.  Originally a journalist, she retrained whilst out there and is now also a teacher.

I started working life doing basic office duties in the Design Office at Rolls Royce, Crewe and graduated to become Secretary to the Chief Designer before leaving to start a family.  Since then I’ve worked in various secretarial roles, my last full-time job being Secretary to the Plant Manager at Foden Trucks.

I’m a keen gardener and 13 years ago, along with some friends, helped to establish Sandbach Allotment Society.  I was Secretary of the Society 10 years, but now look after membership and our ever growing waiting list. Before Covid put the world on hold, I helped to organise the annual Sandbach Garden Trail, a popular event which raised quite a lot of money for various charities.  I am also a keen member of the Clean Team, sit on the Committee and join in the regular litter picks.  I enjoy taking hiking holidays, particularly in Greece, and go walking with the Sandbach Footpath Group. I also take part in a weekly Pilates Class with the U3A.  My other interests are Patchwork, Papercraft and Cryptic Crosswords.

Success for a Sandbach u3a Member!

I am sending you the enclosed photo for inclusion in a forthcoming e-mail newsletter. It is the patchwork block that I submitted to U3A national for the 40th anniversary quilt. 40 blocks have been chosen and I heard just before Christmas that mine is one of those so next week I have to send it off to be made up with the others into a quilt.
I would never have considered sending in a block were it not for the encouragement of the patchwork group members and skills I have learnt from that.
The theme of the quilt is “Positive Aging” and it occurred to me that most U3A members don’t consider age but just have a go and get involved with what interests them and that here in Sandbach we are lucky to have so much on offer – I particularly wanted to put the circus skills in as I doubt any other U3A has such a group and it gave me the idea of all the juggling one has to do to enjoy as much as we can!

Third Age Trust Magazine

Much as we encourage members to keep in touch, we know that the Third Age Trust magazine that drops through your letterbox isn’t for everyone. If you’d prefer not to have a copy please contact membership@sandbachu3a.org.uk.

 And Finally

  1. When you ask me what I am doing today, and I say “nothing,” it does not mean I am free. It means I am doing nothing.
  2. When you do squats, are your knees supposed to sound like a goat chewing on an aluminium can stuffed with celery?
  3. Age 60 might be the new 40, but 9:00 pm is the new midnight.
  4. It’s the start of a brand new day, and I’m off like a herd of turtles.
  5. The older I get, the earlier it gets late.
  6. When I say, “The other day,” I could be referring to any time between yesterday and 15 years ago.
  7. I remember being able to get up without making sound effects.
  8. I had my patience tested. I’m negative.
  9. Remember, if you lose a sock in the dryer, it comes back as a Tupperware lid that doesn’t fit any of your containers.
  10. If you’re sitting in public and a stranger takes the seat next to you, just stare straight ahead and say, “Did you bring the money?”
  11. Don’t bother walking a mile in my shoes. That would be boring. Spend 30 seconds in my head. That’ll freak you right out.
  12. I run like the winded.
  13. I hate when a couple argues in public, and I missed the beginning and don’t know whose side I’m on.
  14. When someone asks what I did over the weekend, I squint and ask, “Why, what did you hear?”
  15. I don’t mean to interrupt people. I just randomly remember things and get really excited.
