Getting to know you: the Sandbach & District u3a Committee

My name is Pam Thomas, Cheshire born, Cheshire bred living in Sandbach for the last 11 years.
I joined Sandbach U3A in January 2018 and casually enquired about weekend groups, only to be told that their weren’t any but would I like to start one?Hence, the birth of
the Sunday lunch Discussion Group which is about to start its 4th year at the new venue of Sandbach Rugby Club.As a Trustee and committee member, I am events organiser and library officer, arranging events such as the successful Showcase held just prior to last March’s lockdown.
I enjoy membership of several U3A groups and am looking forward to groups restarting.
Currently, I am helping with the Cheshire Vaccination Team – but of course, not in full time employment!

Group Leaders needed

Group Leaders are an essential part of Sandbach u3a, without them groups would be forced to close and members would lose access to all their individual activities.

Being a Group Leader involves a certain amount of organisational and administrative work, for example, organising and co-ordinating group sessions, maintaining group information on the computer management system SWISH (attendance records and session fees) and obviously keeping in touch with group members. The Group Leader’s role can be shared by a number of members, this makes the role less onerous as well as providing support and cover as required. Group Leaders

also liaise with the Programme, Venue and Groups Co-ordinators who are always there to offer support and help along the way. You don’t need any special qualifications to be a Group Leader – just a willingness to support other members.

We’re currently looking for replacement leaders for the following groups:

Bowls 6 – meet weekly on Monday afternoon’s 2-4pm at the Marriott Green, Sandbach Park during the summer. The outdoor season lasts until the greens close at the end of September then play reverts indoors on mats at Sandbach Town Hall.

Walking – Intermediate – meets on the second Thursday of the month for walks between 5.5 and 7.5 miles long

If you think you can help support Sandbach u3a by volunteering as a Group Leader and would like further information please contact the Groups Coordinator groups.co-ordinator@sandbachu3a.org.uk

Vaccination Update from Sandbach GPS

‘We are currently booking patients in for their second vaccine around 11 weeks after their first vaccine. Patients will usually be contacted around 9-10 weeks after their first vaccine appointments

After you have been vaccinated, to protect yourself and your family, friends and colleagues, you MUST still:

    • practise social distancing
    • wear a face mask
    • wash your hands carefully and frequently
    • open windows to let fresh air in
    • follow the current guidance
This quote helps explain the reason for continuing vigilance:
“You have to remember the vaccine is like a life jacket. It will help keep you alive if the worst should happen. You still have to try to stop yourself falling in the water”
