Last month we published a lighthearted poem about a reluctant member at the Sunday Tea & Cakes event. It seems he took exception to his depiction…
Part 1:The Poem
Going
An afternoon with the u3a? Not that lot again!
“Sweet treats” and a brew – and it’s forecast rain!
Molly, my love, this is right up your street.
But me? Cakes and a cuppa? People to meet?
I know what you’re thinking – you know my refrain,
I’d rather watch paint dry or clean out a drain.
There’ll be noise and folk that I mostly don’t know
What do you mean “just go with the flow”?…….
Part 2: A Letter of Complaint
Re: Recent publication ‘A Reluctant Convert – A Sunday Afternoon Story’
Dear Sir, Madam, or Committee,
I am not one for letters of complaint or complaining of any sort.
However, on this occasion, I have no choice. I must object, in the strongest possible terms, to my recent depiction in the so-called poem, ‘A Reluctant Convert – A Sunday Afternoon Story’.
Whilst much of the poem contains inaccuracies, the most outrageous allegation is that I would even consider attending a u3a function wearing a vest.
I do not wear a vest.
I have never worn a vest.
The only exception to this is during the winter months, and then strictly thermal.
Sartorial slander aside, I am prepared to continue attending on the second Sunday of every month, even though it clashes with Antiques Roadshow, which I have watched every week since 1998, regardless of subject matter.
And to my fellow sceptics, you know who you are, sat at home with the crossword and muttering darkly about “enforced jollity”, I say this: come along anyway.
Nobody is asking you to have “fun”.
Fun is an overused concept.
But a decent chat, a slice of Victoria sponge and a couple of hours in good company is no bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
I understand the next one is tomorrow, the 11th October, from 2pm-4pm at The Wesley Centre.
I shall be there.
Yours,
Ron
P.S. I trust this will be printed, and whoever wrote the ‘poem’ will be suitably reprimanded.
Editor’s Note: The vest allegation has been referred to the Committee, which concluded that the matter requires a Working Party. A Sub-Committee of the Working Party has now been formed and is gathering evidence. We look forward to discussing the matter again at a future date.
