Newsletter July (2) – The Walking Cricket Group. Trips. Sunday Afternoon Tea & Cakes

A second Newsletter for July already – there is a lot going on at the Sandbach & District u3a!

Sandbach U3A Walking Cricket Group Shine at the U3A 2026 Festival

Sandbach U3A’s Walking Cricket Group attended the U3A 2026 Festival and reached the final of the Cricket Tournament — a brilliant achievement in the ten-a-side competition.

The Team: Captain Mick Jackson, Wicket Keeper David Bolton, Val Hollins, Maggie Coats, John Coats, Aled Owen, Eddie Liptrop, Ian Stone, Charlie Stevenson and Rob Thompson.

Captain Mick Jackson tells us:

“Our first game was against Ilkley U3A  and with an all-round excellent team performance we ran out winners by 40 runs.

This led to our next match against a team also victorious in their first game, Sheffield U3A. We’d been forewarned of Sheffield’s ability to score big, so we planned to negate this with some diligent bowling. Another brilliant all-round performance led to a convincing victory by 99 runs.

Both Ilkley and Sheffield have since expressed an interest in return games — proof they weren’t too perturbed by our success!

This took us through to the final against Wakefield U3A. In an extremely close game, Wakefield were announced the victors, despite us outscoring them — under the rules, an extra two women in their team earned them a bonus of 40 runs.

A great day out, plenty of new contacts made and now it’s onwards and upwards to the National Walking Cricket Festival at Worcester County Cricket Club. Thirty-two teams will be taking part from around the country, most affiliated to their County Cricket Foundation.”
