The weather was cloudy and the walkers were hoping that the rain kept away. At the coffee stop some dark clouds put up a sufficient threat that some walkers donned their waterproof trousers, but no rain fell until the walkers were nearly back in Llangollen and then only for a minute.

After trying out two of the long stay car parks the group climbed out of the town to reach the Llangollen Canal. The walkers followed the towpath east until they left it to climb up to Offa’s Dyke Path. When they were nearly at the high point of the walk, they stopped for coffee in a small arena with stony seating. A short climb led the group to the road that comprised Offa’s Dyke Path for a while. At a point where a choice had to be made to climb up to Castell Dinas Bran or continue on Offa’s Dyke Path, the leader chose the tarmac downhill rather than the grassy climb to the castle. None of the walkers objected.

The leader chose to leave Offa’s Dyke Path and head back to the canal because she thought night would fall before the walkers returned home.

On the route cross-country the group stopped for lunch in a small wood.

On returning to the canal, the group walked to the point where water is diverted from the River Dee to the Llangollen Canal at Horseshoe Falls. Walkers who had never seen the “falls” before were disappointed to see that the reality is a weir rather than a Welsh Niagara. After ticking that off their bucket lists, the walkers retraced their steps along the canal to Llangollen.
