Sandbach U3A Diary Update – November 2019

Sandbach U3A Diary Update – November 2019

This message contains a brief monthly update to let members of Sandbach U3A know about new opportunities and things that have occurred.

AGM and Member Meeting Monday 11th Nov 2019

The annual general meeting precedes the next member meeting on Monday 11th November in Sandbach Town Hall. This is a change from having the meeting on the first Monday of the month because the town hall was booked for another event on 4th November. Unfortunately this means that members who attend Remembrance Day events on 11th November are unable to attend the AGM.

The two-minute silence will be observed at 11am in the town hall.

The AGM starts at 10am and will be followed by a presentation by Pauline Minshull and her son showing images related to “Industry in Old Sandbach. Refreshments will be available from 9.30am

U3A Diaries for 2020

The U3A diaries for 2020 have arrived and have all been sold. As a result of this unexpected demand, another 10 diaries have been ordered and will arrive in about 2 weeks. If you think the diary seller is keeping one for you, or you haven’t got round to asking for one, you should respond to this message and he will ensure that one from the new delivery will come your way. The diaries will be available for sale (£2.75 each) at member meetings and at the U3A desk in Sandbach library on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.

Group News (please respond to groups.co-ordinator@sandbachu3a.org.uk for any of these items)

Bowls 4 – Winter & Summer

The group leader and deputy are both stepping down from this group and the number of bowlers in the group has dropped to a level that threatens the group’s financial viability. To ensure the group does not fold completely we urgently require:

  • Someone to take on the role of Bowls 4 group leader
  • Members who are interested in bowling and would like to join the Bowls 4 group, which meets at the following times:
  • Winter (Oct-Mar) – Monday – 10am-12noon – Town Hall
  • Summer (Apr-Sept) – Thursday – 10am-12noon Sandbach Park, Marriott Green

For further information or to express an interest in joining the group please contact the Groups Co-ordinator

Tai Chi for health

Fridays – 10.45am-11.45am Elworth Methodist Church Hall (venue may change) – £2.50 per session

Following the successful trial of this group we are now incorporating it into this year’s programme. Some places have now become available, so please contact the Groups Co-ordinator if you’re interested in attending.

Proposed Travel Group

Vic and Angela Blundell have proposed a “travel club/group” which would be either:

  1. A discussion group for keen travellers who wish to share their travel stories exchanging ideas hints and tips, which could be helpful to those looking for info on different destinations.

For example Vic and Angela have travelled extensively around Croatia so they would be happy to advise anyone planning a trip to that region OR

  1. An audio visual presentation type format where speakers are invited to talk about their travel experiences.

Vic and Angela helped set up the Chester section of the Globetrotters Club in 2006, further information on the Club is available online www.chesterglobetrotters.co.uk

If there are enough expressions of interest to move forward with this, it would be helpful if a number of members were able to assist in the formation of the group and to offer their ongoing support.

Anyone interested in this new group should contact the Groups Co-ordinator.

 Cricket

Walking Cricket is an inclusive format of cricket that is both low impact and ideal for those who used to play the game but no longer wish to spend a whole afternoon running around. It’s also an opportunity for those who have never played the game to try their hand in a fun way.

Walking cricket matches take no more than one hour and may be played indoors or outdoors

The format is:

  • 6 players-a-side in a pairs format
  • Each pair bats for 4 overs
  • A match last for 12 overs per side

This year Barnsley U3A launched a very successful Walking Cricket mixed group and several members of Sandbach U3A Walking Football group have expressed an interest in starting a Walking Cricket group here.

If you would like to be part of this new group please contact the Groups Co-ordinator.
